Can I open up a hair salon if I'm not a hair dresser?

I want to hire hair dressers and estheticians but I want to run the place. Is that possible? Have you ever seen it done, or does the owner/manager always have to be a hair dresser?

Of course you can.

If you look at most businesses, the manager does not do the work. They MANAGE the business...ie decision making.

However, if you are not a hair dresser yourself, then you'd have to hire one..obviously =p

It HELPS that you have the skills to work the business from the start, coz usually for most new businesses the only employee is...you.

However, that doesn't mean that if you personally can't work the business, that you can't start it.

Hope I helped

I think you can but what happens when you have no workers and you don't know anything about hair-dressing.

I think you should get a license or a degree or somthing.Because if you mess up someone's hair they can sue you and get PAID!

In the salon I go to, the owner isn't a hair stylist.

Yes, you can actually own a salon and not be a licensed stylist, but then you have to have a manager who is and can run the salon and know all about the rules and laws...etc... It would be a good idea to get more information on this before you get too involved though! Good luck! One of the salons I had worked in was owned by a fellow who wasn't a stylist but he eventually sold it to the assistant manager who is running it now on her own!

Do you really want to run a business with a high turn over rate? Take it from me I am a hair dresser and we have a high turn over rate. Everytime we lose stylists we lose clientele. People don't like to try new people, when they find someone they like to stick to that person, and when they leave, they don't want to try anyone else. If you are going to open a hair salon be prepared to make it your life. It is hard work managing a salon and employees. Discover the hidden costs. Employee taxes, payroll, overhead like rent, utilities. Insurance to cover your customers in case of an accident. There is a lot of things that people don't take into consideration when opening a business.

You can be the manager. You'll need a license to do the hair yourself.
